External defibrillation
on Monday, June 13, 2005 - 10:59 AM CET Posted by : Anonymous
Non-invasive electrophysiology  In most cases of sudden cardiac arrest, the patient's heart has ceased to function normally and is fibrillating or `quivering' uselessly.

While this is happening, the heart is not pumping, meaning that the brain is not supplied with oxygenated blood. Automated External Defibrillation is the emergency procedure where specially trained first-aiders apply an electronic device to the chest of a cardiac arrest casualty. This device automatically delivers a controlled electric shock to the patient's heart. The application of an Automated External Defibrillation to the casualty's chest delivers controlled shocks to the heart, causing the fibrillation to cease and allowing the heart to start functioning spontaneously. If the heart does not start to function normally, the AED may also provide a basis for effective CPR and medication to restart the heart.
